The Dodecanesian navy in the Greek War of Independence

The islands of the Dodecanese responded to the call of the national uprising immediately, either by offering their fleet, or by sending their sailors to fight on the ships supporting the revolution. The first island that took part in the War was Kassos, which used its fleet to conduct daring raids against the Turks of Rhodes, Crete, Cyprus and the north African coast. It was also of great service to Crete, by supplying its rebels with food and weapons. Other islands, such as Kalymnos, contributed local sailors to man the ships supporting the revolution. Rhodes, however, was unable to take part in the revolution, although many important members of its society had joined the Filiki Etaireia.
